You never know who you'll come across on a Friends' walk… 55 earlybirds on our dawn chorus bird walk on May 6 were joined by a cameraman and producer from CBS, recording an item about the British passion for bird-watching.

CBS's interest had been aroused by the inaugural episode of Tweet of the Day, a series of two-minute-long pieces on Radio 4 introducing British birds and their calls, presented by Friends' Patron Sir David Attenborough (catch it at 5.58am every weekday).

Peter Burrows-Smith and Jan Wilczur led the Friends group in the early light (5am onwards) to hear and watch whitethroats, blackcaps, a little owl and wheatears.

"The best came at the end," says Peter, "when some of us had great views of a female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, including its unique call and drumming – it was my best contact ever in the park with this elusive species!”
